Yesterday we finished reading On The Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Before that Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie and Farmer Boy. He has loved these books and can even tell you how to make headcheese (yuck). Anyway, today he told me he wanted to make a nine patch quilt and surprise Belle with it. Laura and Mary in the series have surprised their baby sister Carrie with various gifts that they have made. They also work on nine patch quilts too. (Note Adam's "pioneer" hat that he had to wear. He also made me wear one. Sorry no picture of that!)

I had some scraps of fabric so I got online to find out some info on nine patch quilts (I've never quilted before. Google to the rescue again!) and how pioneers used the quilts, etc. We also learned that as soon as children could handle a needle, they began working nine patch quilts. Time to get my kids to work!

Adam hand pieced and sewed together six 4 inch blocks. Here's a close up sample of his work.

Here it is. His "pioneer quilt" as he's calling it. I helped assemble the pieces he sewed together. I thought about machine sewing it, but in the pioneer spirit, I stayed with handsewing and it was actually fun! We are planning to make another one tomorrow. Belle will have a nice blanket when we're done. What a thoughtful brother she has:)
